CAPE TOWN AUTHORITIES IN BID TO PROTEXT PENGUIN POPULATION

The City of Cape Town and the Table Mountain National Parks plan to capture and relocate a Caracal suspected of killing at least 20 African penguins at Burghers Walk near Simon's Town, near here.

The city's Environmental Officer, Arne Purves, said here Thursday that they had installed trap cameras along with a walk-in trap to capture the caracal, a medium-sized African wild cat which can grow up to 18 kilogrammes.

Purves said the big cat would be electronically tagged and moved. "It is not normal in the sense that when it kills it kills more than what it needs to feed on.

"In other words, it will kill three, four, up to 10 penguins at a time and only eat one. When it does this night after night, it's obviously becoming habituated to eating and killing penguins, placing a lot of stress on this (penguin) population."
