Monastir hosts 4th National Congress of Geriatrics and 4th Euro Med Geriatrics Meeting, May 20-21

The 4th National Congress of Geriatrics and the 4th Euro Med Geriatrics Meeting will be organised on May 20-21 in Monastir on the theme "Geriatric Emergencies," with the participation of nearly 600 medics and paramedics.

Teaching hospital professor at the Fattouma Bourguiba CHU in Monastir and president of the congress Soni Ouali Hammami told TAP that "there is a certain lack of respect for the rights of the elderly in the family, as well as among medical and paramedical staff and decision-makers, and a lack of dedicated practices.

She called in this regard, for the creation of the "Geriatrics" speciality in Tunisia, pointing out the positive repercussions that such a choice will have on this population category which accounts for nearly 12% of the total number of inhabitants in Tunisia, as well as in terms of costs and efficiency.

Workshops on a variety of subjects, including "Conscious sedation for painful geriatric care," "Management of hypertensive emergencies" and "Management of acute confusion in frail subjects" are on the congress agenda.

A panel debate on "the ethical stakes of ageing" and a round table on "oral anticoagulants" will also be held at the initiative of the Tunisian Geriatric Society (STG) and the Maghreb Academy for Medicine of Aging (MAMA).
