Republic of Benin to link rail line to Nigeria (Daily Trust (Nigeria))

President Boni Yayi of Republic of Benin has offered to build a Railway line all the way from Cotonou to Madakali, a boarder town with Kebbi State in Nigeria to boost economic relations.

A statement issued yesterday in Birnin Kebbi, the Chief Press Secretary to Governor Atiku Bagudu, Abubakar Muazu Dakingari, after the governors recent official visit to Benin Republic, following the directives by President Muhammadu Buhari to represent him,

quoted President Yayi saying that, a similar railway to connect neighbouring countries of Niger Republic , Burkina Faso and Togo would also be constructed, in addition to that proposal to link Benin Republic with Kebbi State.

President Yayi also proposed a flight-links between Cotonou Airport and Sir Ahmadu Bello International Airport, Birnin Kebbi.

He suggested the development of hydropower electricity plants on either side that can serve the two communities using the water resources on their common border, the statement further stated.

The President also believed that,the relations with Nigeria , considering the strategic position of Nigerian businessmen, especially Kano traders in international business would serve as Benin Republic window to the world.

Yayi also proposed to build a Dry-port at Ilwa to strengthen the economic ties with Nigeria.Furthermore, he promised to build other roads to the border of Nigeria to linkup with roads from Nigeria.

Yayi, while conducting the governor and his delegation round the sea-port of Cotonou, he also stated that, Benin Republic will assist Nigeria most especialy Kebbi State in its strive for economic excellence. On agriculture, Yayi suggested that, Joint-Agro-Allied Investments for the benefit of the two nations be pursued considering the fact that, the soil texture of Benin and that of Kebbi, most especially , are very similar and can grow similar crops.

He encouraged the setting up of two bilateral committees between Kebbi State and Benin to immediately work on some of these proposals.

He also proposed for business Regional Consultation Forum between businessmen, government officials,politicians and other stakeholders from both sides to meet from time to time and discuss issues of mutual benefit.

He also suggested cultural affiliation between Nigeria and Benin through education and cultural linkages.

President Yayi also appointed two Nigerians , one of whom is an indigene of Kebbi State, Alhaji Mustapha Haliru Bulasawa and Consular-General Muntari Ali Daura to push through all the proposal for economic development of the two nations.

Yayi promised to pay a return visit to Kebbi State.
